Description
The United States Postal Service (USPS) issued a 33-cent postage stamp featuring the cast of The Cosby Show in 2004. The Cosby Show was a hugely popular television sitcom that aired from 1984-1992 and was created by comedian Bill Cosby. The show centered around the Huxtable family, a middle-class African-American family living in Brooklyn, New York. The stamp features actors Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Sabrina Le Beauf, Tempestt Bledsoe, Keshia Knight Pulliam, and Lisa Bonet. The stamp was designed by artist Mark Summers, who received the commission after submitting a series of sketches to the USPS.
The stamp was released at a special ceremony at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York. At the ceremony, Cosby said, “I’m so pleased to be part of a stamp that honors a show that I’m so proud of.” The stamp was issued as part of the USPS’ Celebrate the Century stamp series.
The Cosby Show stamp was highly successful, with over 500 million stamps sold. It was the first stamp to feature an all African-American cast and was a popular choice for mailers of all ages. It is still considered one of the most successful stamps issued by the USPS.
