Description
John J. Audubon wrote extensively on the jay species, with his most notable work being his book, Birds of America. Audubon wrote that jays were easy to observe and described them as “bold, noisy and vivacious“ birds. He noted that they were very social and that they worked together to gather food, build nests, and care for their young. He also wrote that jays were fond of playing tricks on other birds and animals, and that they could be very aggressive when defending their territory. Audubon wrote that jays were often found in pairs or small groups, and he noted their characteristic loud calls and their habit of storing food for future use. He also wrote about jays‘ intricate courtship behaviors and their habit of hiding food for their young. Audubon‘s detailed observations of jays and their behavior helped to make them one of the most well–known and beloved birds in North America.
