American Treasures: William H. Johnson, Flowers Painting US #4653 – 2012 First-Class Forever Stamp
$3.00
The American Treasures Series stamp was issued to honor William H. Johnson, an African-American artist. Johnson was born in Florence, South Carolina in 1901, and is considered one of the most important African-American painters of the 20th century. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, and in Paris, where he was exposed to European modernism.
Johnson’s work was characterized by its vivid colors and bold shapes. He often depicted ordinary people, including African-American musicians, farmers, and domestic workers, as well as landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Johnson was especially interested in depicting the African-American experience, and he often incorporated aspects of African-American culture into his work.
