Description
Quilts of Gee’s Bend: Housetop and Log Cabin designed by Lottie Mooney and issued on August 24, 2006. The stamp depicts a traditional half-log cabin, also known as a housetop cabin, as it was commonly referred to by pioneer settlers in the Appalachian Mountains. The stamp was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The stamp is a tribute to the courage and strength of the pioneers who left their homes and ventured into the unknown in search of new opportunities. It is also a reminder of their resourcefulness and ingenuity in building their homes out of the materials that were readily available to them. The half-log cabin was a sturdy and reliable form of shelter that was popular among the settlers in the Appalachian Mountains. It was also an iconic symbol of the American pioneer spirit.
