Description
The men’s running events at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics were highly competitive and featured some of the world’s top athletes. The events included sprints, middle and long-distance races, and relays.
In the sprints, Canada’s Donovan Bailey won the gold medal in the 100m race, setting a new world record with a time of 9.84 seconds. Bailey’s victory was particularly notable as it marked the first time that a non-American had won the men’s 100m Olympic gold medal since 1980.
In the middle and long-distance races, Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie won the gold medal in both the 10,000m and 5,000m races. Gebrselassie’s victories cemented his status as one of the greatest distance runners of all time and helped to put Ethiopia on the map as a powerhouse in long-distance running.
The United States had success in the relays, winning gold medals in both the 4x100m and 4x400m races. The 4x100m relay team, made up of Jon Drummond, Andre Cason, Dennis Mitchell, and Leroy Burrell, set a new Olympic record with a time of 37.40 seconds.
