The Benjamin Banneker stamp is a symbol of the perseverance and ingenuity of the American spirit. As a self–taught mathematician, astronomer, and inventor, Banneker was a pioneer of his time. He was born into slavery in Maryland in 1731, but went on to play a pivotal role in surveying the land for the nation’s capital in the late 1700s. Despite the many obstacles he faced, Banneker was able to build a wooden clock from scratch, a feat which was remarkable for his era. . The 15–cent stamp was designed by Jerry Pinkney and serves as a lasting tribute to Banneker’s remarkable accomplishments.
