Buffalo Soldiers

The American Buffalo Soldiers were African-American soldiers who served in the United States Army during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The name “Buffalo Soldiers” was given to them by the Native Americans they fought against, who were impressed by their courage and the texture of their hair, which they likened to that of the buffalo.

The Buffalo Soldiers were initially formed in 1866, following the Civil War, as part of the regular U.S. Army. They were one of the first peacetime all-black regiments in the Army and were primarily stationed in the western frontier. Their main duties included protecting settlers, building roads and telegraph lines, and engaging in military campaigns against Native American tribes.
