Description

Madam’s mansion, Villa Lewaro, designed by black architect, and named by her friend, famed opera singer Erico Caruso, was built 1916 – 1918 and still stands in Irvington New York. Her neighbors, at the time, the robber barons of the guided age, reportedly thought that she was the maid, of their new neighbor and reportedly thought that it was strange  that she was driving her employer’s, car. Madam’s revolutionary hair care products are still being sold today.

The Madam C.J. Walker stamp, 21st issue of, “The Black Heritage Series, “  is a commemorative stamp issued by the United States Postal Service in 1998. The stamp features a portrait of Walker, an African American entrepreneur and philanthropist who became the first female self-made millionaire in the United States by developing and marketing a line of hair care products for black women in the early 1900s. The stamp was designed by Jerry Pinkney and was issued as a 32-cent stamp.
