Muddy Waters was an American blues musician, known for his powerful vocals and innovative guitar playing. He was born McKinley Morganfield on April 4, 1913, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, and began playing guitar and harmonica as a child.
In the early 1940s, Waters moved to Chicago, where he became a popular performer in the city’s blues clubs. He signed with Chess Records in 1947 and began recording some of his most famous songs, including “Hoochie Coochie Man” and “I’m Ready.”
Waters was a key figure in the development of Chicago blues, and his music influenced generations of musicians. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and received numerous other honors throughout his career.
Waters passed away on April 30, 1983, but his legacy lives on through his music and his influence on blues and rock musicians around the world. In 1994, the United States Postal Service honored him with a commemorative stamp.
