Description
The stamp was issued to commemorate the quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. These quilts were created by a group of African American women in the small, isolated community of Gee’s Bend, are present in galleries and sold worldwide. The women used scraps of fabric from their husbands’ overalls and dresses, and combined them with simple shapes and bold colors to create quilts that had never before been seen.
The stamp features Jessie T. Pettway’s quilt, Bars and String-Pieced Columns. Pettway’s quilt is a classic example of the improvisational quiltmaking style used by the Gee’s Bend quilters. She combined strips of fabric with a variety of prints and colors to create bold geometric patterns. Her use of bright, vibrant colors and creative designs make her quilts stand out and draw attention to the unique art form created by the Gee’s Bend quilters.
