Description
The stamp was issued to honor Annie Mae Young, an African American quiltmaker who was born in rural Florida in 1912. She began quilting at the age of 13, and by the time she was in her early 20s, she had developed a unique style of quilting that combined her appreciation of traditional quilting patterns with an innovative use of bright colors and fabrics.
Annie Mae became well known for her quilts, which she named “Blocks and Strips.” Her quilts combined traditional quilting patterns with a strong emphasis on color and texture. She often used fabric scraps from clothing, flour sacks, and other items to create her quilts.
Annie Mae was honored for her quilting in 2002, when the Florida Legislature declared her an “outstanding artist of the state.” Her quilts are now displayed in the Smithsonian Institution, the American Folk Art Museum, and other prominent venues. The stamp was issued to honor Annie Mae and her unique style of quiltmaking.
