Description
The stamp honors Nine Patch, an African American quilt pattern. It is based on a quilt block that was first popularized in the United States in the mid-1800s. The design is made up of nine smaller patches arranged in a grid. The pattern is used for a variety of quilting projects and is still popular today.
The stamp was designed by Ruth P. Moseley. She was born in Missouri and moved to Washington, D.C. in the 1940s. She worked at the Smithsonian Institution and the National Air and Space Museum. She developed a passion for quilting and created quilts featuring African American designs. She was a founding member of the African American Quilt Guild of Maryland and the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles. She also served as a board member of the International Quilt Study Center & Museum.
The Nine Patch stamp was issued on August 24, 2006. It was part of the Celebrate the Century series which honored significant events and celebrities of the 20th century. The stamp features a quilt block with a red, green, blue, and yellow patchwork design. It was printed in sheets of 20 stamps and was available with a first-day cancellation from Washington, D.C.
