The American Treasures Series stamp was issued to honor William H. Johnson, an African-American artist. Johnson was born in Florence, South Carolina in 1901, and is considered one of the most important African-American painters of the 20th century. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, and in Paris, where he was exposed to European modernism.

Johnson’s work was characterized by its vivid colors and bold shapes. He often depicted ordinary people, including African-American musicians, farmers, and domestic workers, as well as landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Johnson was especially interested in depicting the African-American experience, and he often incorporated aspects of African-American culture into his work.

Description

William H. Johnson (1901-1970) was an African American artist and a leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance. He was born in Florence, South Carolina, He left South Carolina, in 1916, during the great migration and moved to Harlem, where he lived with his uncle, who was a pullman porter.  Johnson was self-taught in the arts and developed a unique style of painting that blended aspects of folk art and modernism. He often depicted African American subjects in his work, and his paintings reflected the vibrancy and joy of African American life in the 1920s and 1930s.
 
Johnson studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League of New York in the 1920s and 1930s. He also traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States. During his travels, Johnson was exposed to a variety of artistic styles and movements, which he later incorporated into his own work.
 
In the late 1930s, Johnson moved to New York City and began exhibiting his work in galleries and museums. He received critical acclaim for his paintings and sculptures, and his work was included in several important museum collections.
 
Johnson was a prolific artist and painted until his death in 1970. His work has been widely exhibited and is held in numerous collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Johnson’s work is seen as a crucial contribution to the Harlem Renaissance and a significant example of African American art.
