Willie Stargell was a professional baseball player who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for his entire 21-year career. He was born on March 6, 1940, in Earlsboro, Oklahoma, and passed away on April 9, 2001, in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Stargell began his career with the Pirates in 1962 and quickly became known for his powerful hitting. He was a seven-time All-Star and won two National League Most Valuable Player awards, in 1971 and 1979. Stargell also helped lead the Pirates to two World Series championships, in 1971 and 1979, and was named the World Series MVP in 1979.
