Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs.
King’s activism and leadership was instrumental in the American civil rights movement, which aimed to end racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans. He played a key role in several landmark events, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
King’s advocacy for racial equality, social justice, and nonviolence earned him many accolades, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He remains a highly respected figure in American history and is celebrated each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday observed on the third Monday in January.
